The beautiful tract of land bearing this name was first settled in or about the year 1760, by Col. John Mulryne, who came to this country from England, and removed from Charleston, S. C. to Georgia. In 1761, this property, by the marriage of Josiah Tatnall of Charleston, S. C. with Mary, the daughter of Col. John Mulryne, came into the possession of the Tatnall family: Gov. Tatnall of Georgia being born there in 1765
This marriage is of peculiar interest, since from it date the avenue of beautiful trees, which form the pride and chief features of interest of the place. The trees were planted about that time, and a tradition has it in the forms of the letters M and
T., the initials of the families Mulryne and Tatnall. The majority of these trees are of the Live Oak species. with but few others. The latter have long since passed away, but the sturdy oaks, with their hoary beard of moss, still defy the gales of the Atlantie and wintry blasts; and their rustling leaves whisper a ceaseless lullaby to the quiet and peaceful sleepers at their feet.
In the year 1817, this property passed by purchase into the hands or Capt. P. Wilberger, and with him originated the idea of devoting Bonaventure to its present and final use.
His remains sleep under the foliage of its trees. Cireum-stances prevented for a time the execution of this wish, but it was taken up by his son Major W. H. Wiltberger, and the present Cemetery Co., in 1869, was the result of his efforts.
The first adult buried at Bonaventure was the wife of Gov.
Tatnall, who died there in 1808, being soon followed by her honored husband.
This brief sketch was kindly furnished the present Cemetery Co. by Com. Josiah Tatnall, and Major W. HI. Wiltber-ger, and must be of interest to all those visiting the place.
