Our Story – From Humble Beginnings to a Trusted Name in Photography
In 1958, a young and determined Bernie Klein took on the role of manager at a newly opened local camera shop on East Ohio Street in Pittsburgh. Tasked with growing the business, Bernie quickly became a beloved figure in the local photography community, known for his honesty, expertise, and unwavering commitment to his customers.
Bernie's impact was so profound that within a year, the shop was thriving. However, the owner made the unexpected decision to replace Bernie with his son, leaving Bernie without a job. But Bernie didn’t let that setback stop him. Just a block away, he rented a small storefront and proudly hung a sign that read: “Bernie’s Photo Shop – Little Shop, Big Values!”

In the following weeks and months, loyal customers who visited his old place of employment asking, “Where’s Bernie?” soon discovered his new shop—and they followed him there. From that moment, Bernie’s Photo Shop became a cornerstone of the Western Pennsylvania photography scene, known for offering exceptional service and dependable values.
Now, more than six decades later, we continue Bernie’s legacy of serving the community with passion and dedication. And with the launch of our new website, we’re excited to welcome a global audience to experience the same commitment to quality and customer care that has made Bernie’s a trusted name since 1958.

Bernie (Founder)
Bernie is the founder of the photo center. He started the business back in 1958 – over 60 years ago! We've worked hard to keep bringing you quality products and services for your photography and plan to keep doing so for years to come! We'd like to think that Bernie would be proud!

Bruce (Bernie's Son & Current Owner)
Bruce is the current owner and son of founder, Bernie himself. He grew up helping his father in the shop over the years and has taken up the mantle of owner and operator when his father decided to retire from the business. Growing up having Bernie's Photo Center as a staple of his life, he has acquired a wealth of knowledge that he now calls upon every day. If you have a question about photography, chances are Bruce knows the answer!
