"ON THE COVER: The brutal heat of the desert and the bitter cold of a snowstorm are but two of the special problems photographers must face. Allen Duttons picture of the desert near Uma, Arizona, was taken in December. But he had to shoot it at dawn to avoid the fierce sun that bakes the land even in winter. The picture of snow on the door of a shed by Minor White was shot after a five-day blizzard in upper New York State. The 10 degree temperature made the metal of the camera so cold White had to shift it from hand to hand, even though he was wearing gloves."
